If you are desperate to lose your fat tummy, then it really helps if you understand the causes of the problem in the first place.
The majority of people still believe that a fat tummy is simply the result of a lack of exercise and a bad diet. Although these are the cmost common causes of the rpoblem, there are many other contributing factors which need to be taken into account. Here are some causes of fat tummy that you may never even have taken into consideration.
Cause 1: A Slow Metabolism
Its a well known fact that people have different metabolic rates, and as we get older our metabolism tends to slow down. In terms of weight loss, this means that our bodies dont burn as many calories as we get older. This can lead to added weight gain. The slowing of the metabolism also leads to increased fat storage - particularly around the middle leading to the dreaded fat tummy!
Cause 2: The Menopause
Luckily, this only affects half of the population, but it is still a major contributing factor to the problem of fat tummy. One of the many changes that take place during the onset of the menopause is, unfortunately, additional weight gain, and in particular around the middle and thighs.
Cause 3: Stress
Stress is actually one of the major contributing factors in weight gain. There are many more serious health implications than just a fat tummy, especially as the period of stress becomes longer and more severe.
Thanks to a hormone called cortisol, that is released when we are under stress, weight gain is a definite physical rather than a mental problem.Cortisol causes your liver to create more sugar and you start to feel hungrier as a result leading you to eat more. You can guess where most of these additional calories end up.
Cause 4: Genetics
Unfortunately, in some cases, genetics itself plays a role in our body shape.
We are often referred to as pear or apple shaped because of this.
Pear shaped people are those of us who tend to put on weight around the lower half of their body. Apple shapes are characterised by weight gain around the top half.
You can get a clue as to which you are be looking at your overweight relatives.
If they are apple shaped then it may be the case that you will find a fat tummy comes naturally to you no matter what you do.
Cause 5: Poor Digestion
This can also be caused by stress, see what I had to say about that above.
Amazingly, some people who complain of a fat tummy are actually suffering from poor digestion and its actually a bloated sensation they are experiencing rather than weight gain.
Cause 6: Poor Posture
Most people dont even consider this one.Poor posture often makes a fat tummy look much more pot belied in appearance. To check the effect that your posture is having, just stand in front of the mirror and raise yourself up erect, check out the difference! Now poor posture is unlikely to be the cause of a fat tummy on its own - chances are there is also excess fat there, but the poor posture can accentuate the appearance of the belly fat.
Cause 7: Eating Late at Night
If you are trying to lose belly fat in particular, then you should avoid late night eating. Not only will you feel bloated and get a bad nights sleep, but your body wont have the chance to digest the food properly.
You greatly increase the chances of gaining weight around the middle by doing this.Eat fruit or a handful of nuts instead of a burger or fries if you have to eat later at night.
What Does This Mean For Me?
As I said at the beginnning, diet and exercise are the two most likely things that are causing your fat tummy, so you really need to take them into account. Any diet and exercise regime that you try and undertake to tackle your fat tummy will also need to take these other contributing factors into account, if it is to ultimately be successful.
